The artist Zimou Tan graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco in 2001 with degrees in both Fine Arts and Traditional Illustration. He served there as a professor of Fine Arts until the beginning of 2014, when he left to focus on his portraiture commissions.
Zimou’s paintings have been exhibited in New York, California, Florida, including many states in the United States, and China. He specialized in portraiture because it is the most difficult and interesting since each portrait is a challenge on its own, mastered by patient artists. Tan's portraiture goal is to capture the soul of the subject. Zimou has committed countless hours to perfect his skills, adding refinements in step with time to his technique. He specialized in creating charcoal drawn portraits and traditional oil painting portraits.
He was named Master Artist by Chinese government in 2007 and in 2009 he was selected as one of the “50 Artists who had impacted China the most” during the year. He is a member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, American Society of Portrait Artists, Associate Living Master of Art Renewal Center. In 2022 he won a Silver Medal of Honour from Allied Artists of America at 109th annual competition exhibition at the Butler Museum (Ohio).
